Golf just got even weirder. Not so long ago, the thought of Rory McIlroy praising Greg Norman was absurd, but here he was on Thursday complimenting his fellow multiple major winner after LIV Golf confirmed that the Australian has been replaced as chief executive.
Telegraph Sport revealed two months ago that the Saudi-funded circuit was appointing Scott O’Neil to take over the reins, with Norman being moved upstairs after three highly-turbulent years.
The news has finally been made official and O’Neil – the much-respected sports and entertainment executive whose most recent role was running the conglomerate in charge of Legoland and Alton Towers – is already in control.
In the statement, Norman struck a positive tone and LIV insists the switch at the top has been devoid of acrimony. The 70-year-old’s contract expires in August and he will remain on the board and in an as-yet-undefined role.
Yet with negotiations continuing towards a peace deal between the Saudi Public Investment Fund and the PGA Tour, the days of Norman railing at the establishment – and those he called “the tour’s cheerleaders” – are over. As are the inflammatory responses from McIlroy, as the chief mouthpiece against LIV and its firebrand commissioner.
“Greg obviously took a lot of flack in LIV’s first couple of years,” McIlroy said here at the Dubai Desert Classic after posting an opening 70, five back from a group on seven-under including crack American amateur David Ford. “He’s probably one of the only people in golf that could have taken on that role. So he got it off the ground and you’ve got to commend him for that. Now it’s time for someone with a bit more experience in this to take over.”
If his last point was a distant echo of McIlroy’s famous put-down in November 2022 when he called for Norman to leave the LIV hot seat – “Greg should exit stage left because no one is going to talk unless there’s an adult in the room” – then the overarching sentiment is simply an extension of the Northern Irishman’s change of heart when it comes to the breakaway league.
For the betterment of the game and a unified global schedule, McIlroy has urged the PGA Tour to strike a deal with the PIF, although like everyone, he is uncertain how a resolution would either look or work. And with the appointment of O’Neil, the American who has previously led sports franchises such as the New York Knicks, the Philadelphia Eagles and the New Jersey Devils, McIlroy feels the Saudis will not imminently be putting up LIV for sacrifice in the new order.
“I honestly don’t know what the future holds for them, but the moves that they’re making, especially from an executive standpoint, it doesn’t look like they’re going to go away anytime soon,” McIlroy said. “Scott’s got an amazing track record and has the right credentials to take over a sports league. So, yeah, I think for LIV it’s probably a good move now that they’re established.”
No doubt, the LIV detractors will depict this as a bad move for the Great White Shark, but he remains close to Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor and chairman of LIV, who, in the statement, celebrated his influence and success.
As McIlroy pointed out, Norman played a vital part in the formation of the upstart circuit that has irrevocably altered the landscape of professional golf. Granted, the two-time Open champion attracted huge controversy for some of his remarks – “Everyone makes mistakes,” he replied at the LIV launch when asked if he could justify working for a Kingdom that, in 2018, ordered the butchery of journalist Jamal Khashoggi – and was never less than confrontational in his barbs at the tours, as well as the four majors.
However, Norman was the perfect disruptor because he, himself, first proposed the notion of a breakaway world league in the 90s and had significant connections with some of the notable names LIV were able to secure in its billion-dollar raids, including Dustin Johnson, Cam Smith, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood.
Norman did fall foul of McIlroy and Tiger Woods but as a golfing superstar in his own right, he refused to back down. Despite the Saudi billions, LIV required his bullishness and his chutzpah and he has vowed to carry on trying to assist in the progress of what will always be referred to as his unruly baby.
“I’m excited to pass the baton of day-to-day management and continue to help do what I can to grow LIV Golf,” Norman declared as his parting shot. “Long LIV Golf.”
