In a single minute during the coverage of last month’s Manchester derby, Kelly Cates provided a glimpse of why the BBC viewed her as such an outstanding candidate to host Match of the Day.
Cates, who has been confirmed along with Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan, as one of a trio of successors to Gary Lineker, had seen the confrontation between Kyle Walker and Rasmus Hojlund that ended with the Manchester City defender theatrically clutching his face on the floor.
“Roy, would you have given a red card for this?” asked Cates, deadpan. The bear had been skilfully poked and, following a wonderful 40-second Roy Keane rant that provided endless social media clips, Cates simply turned to the camera, raised her eyebrows, and ushered in the next set of commercials.
Job done with minimum effort, maximum eye-twinkle, and yet no attempt to force any opinion into the conversation and do anything but extract the very best from her guests.
That might look easy but it rather helps when you have the experience and understated self-confidence that follows more than 25 years in front of the camera, as well as the obvious respect of former players such as Keane.
Indeed, if there was one striking reaction to news that Cates is to be part of the new Match of the Day team next season, it was the general chorus of approval. That’s pretty rare on anything these days, especially on social media, but also simply an acknowledgement of the consistent quality of her work.
It was similarly noticeable in private conversations in November between Telegraph Sport and a selection of BBC producers and commentators following news that Lineker would be leaving after 25 years on football’s most iconic show. The names Cates, Chapman and Logan came up repeatedly.
Cates is of course the daughter of Sir Kenny Dalglish and, having grown up during Liverpool’s greatest on-field era from the mid-1970s until the late-1980s, the obvious cliche is that she was born for a job that was shared by Jimmy Hill and Des Lynam through her school years. Alongside running room to room pre-match inside Anfield in search of sandwiches and being babysat by Graeme Souness, childhood memories inevitably include watching her dad regularly star on the nation’s favourite football show.
Cates’s stock answer to being asked what it was like growing up as the daughter of Sir Kenny is “compared to what?” emphasising that it was all she knew and how, as a child, a parent’s occupation is rarely at the forefront of your mind. “Who they [parents] are as people has much more of a lasting impact,” she said during a 2021 appearance on the Mid-Point with Gabby Logan podcast.
And, while Cates has also become immersed in the football industry, she has emphatically forged her own path. After A-levels in maths, further maths, physics and chemistry, she took the decision to cut short her degree at the University of Glasgow to take up a presenting role at Sky Sports News when the channel was first launched in October 1998. It was a genuine sliding doors moment – she puts it down to the confidence of youth and a desire to work rather than study maths – but seeing an academic life outside of football has evidently brought perspective.
“When you are young, you think everything is the chance, the opportunity,” she said. “[Now] in my forties, other things going on, you think, ‘There are lots of reasons to want to do well… but, in the grand scheme of things, this is football on telly, I’m not going to change the world’.”
It is an outlook that underpins a style that has something in common with Lynam for its relaxed but authoritative delivery that can seamlessly shift from irreverent and humorous to the more serious and cutting. Cates, though, does acknowledge that a background steeped in football was probably helpful while emerging during a time when female football presenters were so rare.
“Because I always felt part of that world, it never occurred to me to question my place,” she says.
An immediate sense of belonging cannot be underestimated, but nor can the breadth of work that has since been amassed. After Sky Sports News, Cates worked as an interviewer and presenter for Setanta and ESPN. She has been a reporter for ITV and Channel 4 on major events that include the World Cup and the Paralympics.
She presented Football League highlights for Channel Five before her return to Sky Sports in 2016, where she moved from hosting Football League matches to now one of the most respected anchors on the biggest Premier League matches. Her extensive work in radio, notably on the 606 phone-in with Ian Wright, also gained plaudits.
“Kelly is fantastic at this job because she has been in a football house all her life, listened to the daft chat from all of us since she was tiny,” says Souness. “I’d be in the living room, Alan Hansen would be in there, opinions going out all over. She had a great insight into how this football world works.”
Logan says that Cates has an “effortless broadcast style and depth of knowledge that can pretty much rival anybody”, adding that she can also “disarm the likes of Roy Keane with a single eyebrow when she wants to shut him up”.
Cates herself stressed on that 2021 podcast with Logan that she is “not a planner” in her career but that she hoped still to be presenting football for many more years.
