USC stepped into the No. 1 seed line, bumping South Carolina down to a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee’s second Top 16 reveal released on Thursday.
The Gamecocks (25-3, 15-1 SEC) dropped a seed line following their blowout loss to UConn earlier this month. UCLA (27-1, 16-1 Big Ten) remains the No. 1 overall seed. Texas (27-2, 13-1 SEC) moved up to the No. 2 overall, USC (25-2, 16-1) leapfrogged to No. 3 and Notre Dame (24-3, 15-1 ACC) remains at No. 4. The Fighting Irish took their first conference loss on Sunday at NC State.
The reveal is the committee’s last ahead of Selection Sunday on March 16. It is based on games through Wednesday and reflects where teams would be seeded if the season ended Thursday morning.
UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and Notre Dame were named No. 1 seeds in the first reveal two weeks ago. No new teams entered the group, but those involved did move around. The top 16 seeds host the first weekend of the NCAA tournament.

The bracket then moves into two super-regional sites in Birmingham, Alabama, and Spokane, Washington, for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. The regional breakdown from the committee:
Spokane 1: UCLA, LSU, North Carolina, Kansas State
Birmingham 2: Texas, NC State, TCU, Ohio State
Spokane 3: USC, UConn, Duke, Kentucky
Birmingham 4: Notre Dame, South Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma
South Carolina’s loss to UConn hurt résumé
The way in which South Carolina lost to UConn on its home court between bracket reveals ultimately hurt the Gamecocks. The contest was close for about seven minutes before the Huskies ran away with a 29-point victory. Remaining competitive in losses is one of the 11 criteria the committee looks at when seeding teams.
“The UConn game had an impact on how that looked in regard to that criteria,” committee chair Derita Dawkins said on ESPN’s broadcast of the reveal.
South Carolina (25-3) ranks second in NET, a guide for the committee, but that’s not an end-all, be-all ranking. The Gamecocks had ranked first all year until this week, when UConn overtook them at No. 1. The loss to UConn was the second in three games, as they also suffered first conference loss since December 2021 in a game at Texas.
The fall from the No. 2 overall seed to No. 5 is major. Rather than facing the No. 7 overall seed as the next-best in their region, they’ll face the tougher road with the No. 4 seed. The Gamecocks have plenty of opportunities to boost their résumé with a finale against Kentucky and strong conference tournament competition in the SEC.
Tennessee jumps four spots
The Lady Vols (21-6, 8-6 SEC) are a team of potential and the committee rewarded their recent four-game winning streak with a bump in the rankings. The results of teams around them also caused movement, Dawkins said. Tennessee slid up from the No. 16 overall seed to No. 12, giving them a cushion down the backend of the season to keep hosting responsibilities. It’s the largest change in the reveal.
“We all agreed with the observable component,” Dawkins said on the broadcast. “When you look at Tennessee, you see a tough squad on the court.”
Tennessee is slightly above .500 in the SEC, but has not lost by a margin of more than seven points (to South Carolina). The Lady Vols lost their six games by a combined 20 points (an average of 3.3 points per game, or two possessions) and they rank 11th in NET.
Hold on hosting duties is weak
Other than South Carolina and USC switching spots at the top of the seedings, no team moved up or down more than one spot except those in the bottom five. It indicates late-season results could weigh heavily in the ultimate bracket decisions, and those at the bottom might fall out by mid-March.
Kansas State dropped from 12 to 15 after losses to West Virginia and Baylor. The Wildcats have fallen two games behind in the Big 12 title race, which will be between TCU (steady at No. 9 in the reveal) and Baylor. Kansas State has been without center Ayoka Lee.
Oklahoma rose two spots to 13 and Ohio State dropped two spots into the danger zone at No. 16. The Buckeyes (24-4) lost by 10 to Indiana, which is ranked 36th in NET. It could be considered a “bad loss” by the committee, pushing them on the brink. They can make up ground in the Big Ten tournament.
ACC ‘Triangle’ will be busy with hoops
NC State, North Carolina and Duke all held on to their top-11 spots in the reveal, setting up a major weekend of hoops in the state. The schools are located within 30 minutes of each other in North Carolina’s “Triangle” region.
NC State held at No. 8, while North Carolina and Duke swapped spots in the 10 and 11 positions. Those could change again soon since they play each other on Thursday.
The three schools hosted NCAA tournament regions in the same year in 1998. NC State reached the Final Four, and rivals North Carolina and Duke made their regional finals. It is the last and only time they have all hosted since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1994.
Notre Dame’s loss opened up a fun race to the ACC regular season title that will play out Thursday and Sunday. The ACC tournament looms large for teams to shore up their seeding spots and potentially move around.
